Many homeowners install cameras inside and around their properties to boost their sense of security. However, occasionally these devices capture footage they never bargained for, which is precisely what happened to a Londoner recently, and the incident left him shaken.

Oliver Smith, who shares content on TikTok under the handle oliverrobertsmith, explained he was out and about when his bedroom camera detected motion at his flat, sparking his curiosity about what might have triggered the alert. When his camera app pinged him with a movement notification, he was puzzled about what could have caused it, so he logged in for a closer look - completely unprepared for what awaited him.

The footage revealed a rat scurrying about his bedroom and peering directly into the camera lens, leaving him absolutely gobsmacked. Admitting he was "horrified" by the discovery, he rushed to throw open his patio doors, empty his bins and give them a thorough bleaching in hope of tackling the situation and assisting withpest management.

Unfortunately, shortly afterwards, the app pinged him with yet another alert, delivering a second image of a rodent prowling around his home. Desperate for assistance, he rang his parents, who promptly arrived to set up traps throughout the property.

While Oliver reckons other Londoners have likely faced comparable predicaments, the experience left him genuinely shaken. After all, discovering a rat through your home security system is hardly what anyone expects, and he described the whole ordeal as "disgusting."

Following its upload, the clip has garnered hundreds of views, with viewers rushing to the comments section to share various tips and suggestions. One person advised: "You need to get pest control in ASAP.

"Mice get everywhere, but rats are bigger so are actually easier to stop. They should be able to rat-proof your flat."

Another chimed in with: "Best thing you can do is contact the council. They have pest controllers who are generally really helpful and know how to stop them."

A third warned: "For every rat you see, there are 10 you don't. Call pest control now."

Meanwhile, a fourth person shared a harrowing tale, writing: "We have such a bad rat problem (up north so nothing related to London). In my area we've had rat infestations three times in the six years I've lived here - rats have genuinely traumatised me."

How to keep rats at bay

Ensure you thoroughly examine the door frame and check there are no cracks, holes or gaps in the frame, flooring or walls. Pay particular attention to corner areas.

Several methods can help seal these openings. Options include applying weather-resistant caulk or sealant, or packing steel wool into smaller holes before sealing with caulk or expanding foam.

Another suggestion is installing metal flashing along the base and edges of doorways to tackle the issue. However, if you suspect rodents have already invaded your home, it's wise to consult a pest control specialist.

Professional exterminators will provide the most suitable guidance for tackling a rodent infestation. Expert intervention is sometimes essential to resolve the problem effectively.
